What is AMP?
Since 2002 country driven requests for technical support on the scale up of LLINs are being met by the Alliance for Malaria Prevention (AMP). AMP coordinates financial resources and implementation support to conduct mass distribution of millions of LLINs as a part of national integrated health campaigns.
During this period, the AMP partners developed core technical competencies—communications, technical, logistical and monitoring and evaluation—to support mass scale-up activities. Now, with a dramatic increase in financial support to African countries through international funding institutions, countries have a pressing need to strengthen their technical and operational capacity to plan and execute campaigns.
AMP provides support and technical assistance in two main areas that aim to meet the campaign needs of each specific country:
Deployment of implementation support to countries
AMP mobilizes support from international or in-country partners. As AMP members, each of its partners has committed to use available resources as a first-line response to meet technical assistance needs.
Where existing partner resources cannot be mobilized, AMP deploys technical specialists for short-term mission assignments. Implementation support cover the following core areas: campaign planning, campaign budgeting, implementation of country LLIN coverage policies, net tendering, campaign management, distribution logistics, communications and monitoring and evaluation.
Training for Scale-Up
AMP regularly develops and conducts implementation trainings aiming to benefit all countries working to scale up nets. The trainings in 2010 focused on behavior change communication and monitoring and evaluation:
This work establishes a base for the development of human resources. Through these formal trainings, AMP aims to build a roster of local LLIN campaign logisticians, communicators and managers who will not only enable countries to satisfy their own domestic program needs, but will also comprise a corps of consultants who can be deployed on a regional basis.
